Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three-hundred-thousand or more types of mold. Exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing or skin irritation, to even more serious conditions. Severe reactions may occur among workers in occupational settings exposed to large amounts of molds. These reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs. According to the EPA, some compounds produced by molds have strong smells and are volatile and quickly released into the air. These compounds are known as microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs). Because mVOCs often have strong or unpleasant odors, they can be the source of the “moldy odor” or musty smell frequently associated with mold growth. A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated.

We removed approximately 200,000 square feet of asbestos and 180,000 square feet of mold from a Gainesville, Texas hospital that was then renovated into a senior care facility. Under the leadership of GM Steve Chappell, this half-million-dollar project was completed in mid-April 2016, for a total of three months start to finish. The exterior of the hospital was to be kept, so all interior removal and renovations were done with the priority to preserve the exterior and overall structure.
